WHY DIRECT DEMOCRACY?

The purpose of the Direct Democracy Project is to help pave the path to the day that decisions in democratic nations will be made by the people, not just by their representatives, in real-time.

Representative democracy, such as we have in the United States, was originally devised to get around the practical problem of transportation in a large democracy; specifically, that all of the people in a nation could not economically vote on a great number of issues, simply because they could not all be physically present to debate and cast a ballot in one location.

Therefore, representatives were elected to get a feel for how their constituents thought about all the particular issues in their home district, and they sent that representative off to vote the way the people of the district could, if only they could be there.

Thanks to the internet, the basis for electing representatives to do all our voting no longer exists. All the citizens of democratic societies will soon be able to use secure authenticated linkage to first become fully informed about any issue, hear all of the arguments for and against a proposition as they are presented, and then cast a vote, all in real-time.

This will form the basis of a superior form of government, in which the freedom and the happiness of all the citizens will be more secure than ever, and it will be impossible for corrupt or deceitful politicians to dominate our political system. It will also become impossible for the news media to enjoy an unchallenged position as the "fourth branch" of government, as all the information about an issue will be directly available to everyone without filtration.

As with all democracies, the rights of individuals will have to be protected in such a way that no majority may usurp their fundamental rights. (Remember that ancient Rome was a democracy, and the people legally voted on the life or death of gladiators as a matter of mere entertainment. Democracy without absolute protection for individuals is no more just than anarchy.) Fortunately, in the United States we have the Bill of Rights intended to delineate just such protections. All citizens in a direct democracy must justly abide by these limitations to the power of government, and without exception respect the rights of individuals.

In our view, the emergence of Direct Democracy is natural and inevitable. The politicians who have carved themselves a very comfortable niche living off tax money and dispensation of influence, and the traditional news media who have hetretofore enjoyed the lucerative position of controlling and selling information and power, will not set aside their takings happily. But the weight of reason will not diminish or disappear; it will grow. Eventually, it will just be too great to ignore. When that does happen, government "OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, AND FOR THE PEOPLE," will not just by a turn of phrase or a justification for a shallower alternative; it will be reality.

ALL SIDES OF THE ISSUES;

Example of direct democracy over the internet; the independent counsel investigation of PresidentWilliam Clinton.

Unlike any other political crisis in American history calling for a well informed public, the investigation of William Clinton by independent counsel Kenneth Starr was accompanied by rapid and direct dissemination of unbiased and unfiltered information over the internet. The testimony incriminating the president in perjury and obstruction of justice was available to the entire electorate within hours of its release, as well as the response of the president.

Please note that the government server has been impossible to access for months, in spite of claims by officials we have contacted that it is still operational; therefore, the links to it have been removed.
